Presidents Council Representatives (PCRs) facilitate communication between CFA Societies and the Board of Governors. Aaron Brown, CFA, became the Presidents Council Chair in September 2018.

Aaron has been an active member of the CFA Society community for a number of years. He gained his CFA charter in 2003 and joined the CFA Society Edmonton board in 2005. Edmonton is a small, public sector town in Canada and Aaron was working at the local university – where he was the only CFA charterholder. In his society roles, Aaron has always enjoyed focusing on students, as he loves talking to this audience and giving back to the next generation.
After being president of CFA Society Edmonton, Aaron went on to the role of PCR for Canada, 2012 – 2016, and was instrumental in establishing CFA Societies Canada. Aaron then moved to Calgary and joined the CFA Society Calgary board; helping with student outreach once again.
Aaron opens up about what he wishes he had known as a society leader:
1. You are not alone
When I went to my first Global SLC in 2008, it was eye-opening how broad the CFA Society network is. Despite societies having different geographic issues, the challenges we all face are similar (i.e. engaging membership and communicating with key stakeholders). As a PCR, sitting at CFA Institute board of governors’ meetings, I realised CFA Society issues are not unique and we must continue to facilitate cross-CFA Society learning so we can share experiences and solutions.
2. There is a broader strategy out there
Since being a PCR, I have been much more aware of the broader CFA Institute strategy. It has helped me, and would help society leaders, to understand how the CFA Institute leadership team are driving strategy and which members of the leadership team are responsible for the different strategic priorities.
3. Knowing your role
It is critical that CFA Societies know how they fit into the broader strategy and understand what role they should play in their corner of the world. The Societies 2.0 roadmap has helped CFA Societies to understand what is expected of them and how it can help to engage local audiences. As we move forward, it would be good to have more connectivity and ensure CFA Societies are working in line with the broader CFA Institute strategy.
