On 21 May 2019, CFA Society Oklahoma hosted its most successful Annual Dinner to date, featuring Frank W. Abagnale, Jr., renowned cybersecurity and fraud prevention expert, as well as best-selling author and subject of the movie ‘Catch Me If You Can’.
The event focused on ethics and Mr. Abagnale discussed his past experiences as a con man, turned crime stopper and shared his related ethical transformation. Mr. Abagnale’s remarks focused on identity theft and methods for the prevention of such theft.
Following his presentation, Michael McMillan, CFA, director of ethics education at CFA Institute, moderated a Q&A session with Mr. Abagnale and both individuals shared their mutual beliefs on the importance of ethics.
Earlier this year, CFA Society Oklahoma applied for (and was granted) project funding for this event. The main goal was to elevate its Annual Dinner to raise awareness of ethical issues throughout the broader financial community.
The project funding support was essential in making this event possible by allowing the Society to offer this high calibre speaker and attract a record amount of sponsorship. As a result of the combined resources of CFA Institute and CFA Society Oklahoma, this was the largest and most financially successful event in the history of the society.
Michael Abboud, Past President of CFA Society Oklahoma, said:
“The project funding support allowed our society to deliver on the vision of Societies 2.0. This event allowed our Society to professionalize our advocacy efforts in the area of ethics and standards.”
CFA Society Oklahoma plans to grow this event into an annual regional ethics event with increased private and public participation.
