The Outstanding Research Award recognizes a local society that has best leveraged existing research content related to the Research Foundation, the Future of Finance, and/or the Financial Analysts Journal. This year, CFA Society Pakistan won the award for its timely research report: “Fintech 2020”.
Last year, CFA Society Pakistan published a timely report that defined the fintech landscape and helped to explain how fintech can revolutionize the financial industry: “Fintech 2020: A Report on Technological Innovations in the Financial Services Industry”.
The report built on existing research ‘Fintech in Asia Pacific: 2018 Edition’ by Larry Cao, CFA Institute and focused on live case studies and regulatory environments. The report covers both conventional and Islamic Fintech, with case studies in e-commerce, investment, consumer finance and credit bureau.
The local society effectively promoted the report to key audiences through a number of initiatives:
- The report was launched at a Fintech Webinar on 1 June 2020 (this was held online due to COVID-19 restrictions).
- Almost 150 reports were physically distributed to industry influencers and regulators.
- Emails were sent to around 1500 members, candidates, charterpendings, regulators and industry professionals.
- The report was actively promoted on the CFA Institute Asia-Pacific Research Exchange (ARX) and featured on the Fintech pages.
- The content was shared with the local academic community and research findings were presented through the university and candidate outreach programs.
- ARX showcased the report in a promotional webinar.
- The report was featured at a SAE workshop in August 2020.
- 300 copies of Larry Cao’s Fintech report were distributed.
The promotion of the report helped the local society to reach a wide, relevant audience and positioned CFA Society Pakistan as a thought leader on Fintech locally. Indeed, a media outlet in Pakistan will be featuring the local society and is looking to conduct collaborative Fintech events; the report helped to open doors with the Securities & Exchange Commission of Pakistan on fintech and resulted in two webinars on crowdfunding and cryptocurrency; and CFA Society Pakistan is now collaborating with other societies on a series of Islamic Fintech webinars.
Sadaf Shabbir, CFA, Director at CFA Society Pakistan, commented: “Overall, we feel that this small but meaningful effort in the Fintech space by CFA Society Pakistan has yielded the desired result of positioning us as thought leaders, gaining significant credibility in the eyes of local regulators. All available resources were optimally leveraged to put together this project, including support from CFA Institute resources, which resulted in its success.”
