The Atlantic Islands and Latin America (Latam) Advocacy Council is a regional entity that works with authorities and regulators to promote the adoption of the highest standards in financial and capital markets in Latam and the Caribbean.
Created in 2020, the Council protects the interests of investors, announces the improvements of the market's infrastructure, and promotes best ethics practices among the financial community.
The regional Advocacy Council is composed of the following 15 directors: Melvin Escudero, Chair (Peru); High Miller, Vice-Chair (Jamaica); Mauro Miranda, PCR (Brazil); Ignacio Montagne (Mexico); Pedro Barraza (Argentina); Barbara Mainzer (Uruguay); Michael Millar (Barbados); Miguel DaPonte (Bermuda); Fabian Leon (Colombia); Wayne Dass (Trinidad &Tobago); Marcelo Suarez (Cayman Islands); Daniel Celano (Brazil); Pablo Urzua (Chile); Velma Miller (Bahamas); and Inigo Bengoechea (CFA Institute).
In 2021, the Advocacy Council worked collaboratively to organise nine virtual, regional events. The events included the valuable participation of 72 high profile speakers and panelists, who assume the positions of CEO, CIO, presidents, vice presidents, directors and investors from important investment and financial companies around the world. These speakers shared their professional experience, knowledge, and points of view on important topics related to financial and investments markets, such as Women in Investment Management, Policy Series, Capital Markets Development, ESG Trends, GIPS Standards, Retirement & Pension Funds and Asset Owners Series. Through effective social media and email marketing, the Advocacy Council had great success in promoting the events and more than 2,000 attendees actively participated in these virtual conferences.
Additionally, the Advocacy Council organized its first regional Ethics Challenge in 2021, with CFA Society Columbia, CFA Society Uruguay, CFA Society Chile, CFA Society Mexico, and CFA Society Peru all participating. The competition was hosted virtually with the assistance of the five winning teams from each local challenge: Universidad Externado de Colombia (Colombia), Universidad de Montevideo (Uruguay), Universidad Adolfo Ibanez (Chile), Universidad Iberoamericana (Mexico), and Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (Peru).
Overall, 31 teams composed of 139 students from 26 universities in Latam participated. The Council also had the valuable support of 31 faculty advisors, who were a fundamental part of the local editions, and 22 judges who shared their professional experience in financial markets, evaluated the teams, and deliberated on the final results. These judges included Barbara Mainzer, President of CFA Society Uruguay; Corporate Finance and Investor Relations Manager at FibraMTY; Rodrigo Diaz Corral, Finance Director at Ministry of Labor and Social Security of Chile; and Wayne Dass, CEO at Caribbean Information and Credit Rating Services.
The Council is committed to promoting activities and initiatives that raise the standards of ethics and professionalism in capital and financial markets and plans to drive these initiatives at a global level in 2022.
