At the strategic planning meeting in August, the CFA Society Dayton board established a goal of increasing membership to 100 members or more (from a baseline of around 80-85 for the prior two years). In addition, the board agreed to increase outreach to the University of Dayton, which had lapsed in participation with CFA Society Dayton activities.

The Society leveraged a connection with a previous faculty member (also a CFA charterholder) in order to identify and meet with key stakeholders at University of Dayton’s Davis Center for Portfolio Management. Following a number of meetings, the Society was able to engage the staff from the University of Dayton by exploring the potential benefits to students of participating in the CFA exam process.
One notable conversation involved the challenges for faculty members and students to attend monthly luncheons organized by CFA Society Dayton. Given the timing and location of these functions, it was often challenging for those at the University of Dayton to make the trip to the meeting and still get back in time to continue their regular class schedule. This led to the board exploring ways to vary the start time, day of the week, and location of the monthly luncheons to better accommodate the needs of all society members.
Subsequent to these discussions, the Director of the Davis Center made membership in CFA Society Dayton mandatory for all seniors in the program, and arranged for the university to cover the students’ membership fees to make it more accessible. In addition to membership, students gained access to networking and social events, as well as eligibility for CFA exam scholarship opportunities provided through the local Society. This resulted in more than 20 new student members joining CFA Society Dayton, which swelled the ranks to over 100 members for the first time in the history of the Society.
Jim Brown, CFA, Membership Chair, CFA Society Dayton said,“We are thrilled to have joined with the faculty, staff, and students from the University of Dayton to provide this opportunity for learning, networking, and continuing education for everyone involved in CFA Society Dayton. We welcome these new members to our organization, and we look forward to a lasting partnership for years to come.”
