The people of East Africa have a rich and intertwined history of shared values, languages, natural resources, social and political structures. The intergovernmental organization, East Africa Community (EAC), is leading the way in the process of harmonious integration of the block through policy that favors free movement of persons, capital, goods, and services; thereby facilitating easier cooperation by professionals. This shared context enables ease of association and a natural capacity for multi-country co-operations, and that was why we established CFA Society East Africa, a multi-country society encompassing five countries: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.
Specific to the financial sector, stakeholders in the EAC have been working towards a monetary union – including integrated capital markets, retirement sectors, cross-border stock listings and regional corporations, although the progress is rightly advised to be tempered with caution.
"Each member of CFA Society East Africa brings with them a unique set of skills, experience and contextual lessons from their countries of origin."
The East Africa region faces the risk of high indebtedness, the threat of agricultural economies vulnerable to the vagaries of nature and has an unhealthy reliance on external importation. However, there is deliberate action to address the challenges, seen in the depth of investment in connectivity through information, communication technologies, road and rail infrastructure, national and regional institutions and a highly engaged private sector. There are several EAC-driven initiatives which bring the regional regulators together to share ideas, and CFA Society East Africa continues to present its advocacy agenda.
CFA Society East Africa, in partnership with CFA Institute, has the opportunity to make a marked impact in the sector, by providing access to global insights, experts, keynote speakers, investment conferences, and continuous professional development. Each member of CFA Society East Africa brings with them a unique set of skills, experience and contextual lessons from their countries of origin.
