In line with the CFA Society Nigeria Byelaws, the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the local society conducted the 2021 Board of Governors (BOG) elections on 12 March 2021.
To raise its profile and increase participation, the local society launched an email marketing and social media campaign profiling all candidates and hosted a virtual event with live Q&A sessions for society members with the candidates. As a result, CFA Society Nigeria recorded an unprecedented 81.3% voter participation.
The electable offices included the office of the President, Vice President, General Secretary, Assistant General Secretary and Treasurer. The election process started with the constitution of an Electoral Committee by the BOT to oversee the elections and a Nominations Committee responsible for managing the nominations process and screening nominees against set nominations criteria.
A call for nominations was sent to all eligible society members, nominees were screened, and successful candidates announced. CFA Society Nigeria launched an email marketing campaign profiling all candidates, a social media campaign to create a media buzz around the elections and more visibility for the local society. An elections website was created to provide a platform for candidates to reach members and share their campaign materials. It then hosted a two-day virtual zoom campaign featuring manifesto presentations, debates, and live Q&A from society members. The campaign recordings can be accessed on the CFA Society Nigeria YouTube channel.
The elections served as an opportunity to promote membership renewals as only active regular members of the local society were eligible to vote. To achieve a seamless voting process that required less than two minutes to vote, CFA Society Nigeria used eballot.com to set up personalized ballots and educate members on the voting process using a step-by-step guide with screenshots. With this strategy, CFA Society Nigeria recorded an unprecedented 81.3% voter participation and results were announced on 13 March, a few hours after the election.
CFA Society Nigeria has produced a Board of Governors Elections Playbook, which guides societies through the nominations process, campaign kick-off, elections and result announcement.
