In 2019, CFA Society Shenzhen began to formally use a WeChat mini-program to manage its activities and membership payment. WeChat Mini Programs are “mini-applications” built within the WeChat platform – a Chinese multi-purpose messaging, social media and mobile payment app.
The local society has found using WeChat to be more efficient, as it provides one system to manage two main functions: Events and membership programs. Thus far, the WeChat mini-program has supported activity management, event review, member business cards, membership payment, questionnaires and votes, and live broadcasts. In 2020, job recruitment and volunteer management will also be included on the platform.
In response to COVID-19, CFA Society Shenzhen developed its own live broadcast platform and management channel on the WeChat app, which enabled it to host virtual events with registration and payment functions. Within a month, the local society held four online professional lectures for society members, with over 2,500 viewers watching the live broadcasts.
Feedback from local members on this initiative has been positive. The local society saw 631 members pay their membership through the mini-app, which was double the number that used the platform in 2019, and over 3800 people joined the local in-person events through the mini-app last year.
Shuang Ding, President of CFA Society Shenzhen said:
“We hope to provide a systemic solution or template for other Chinese regional societies or societies with similar problems. Solving the problem of membership management and event management once and for all and increasing engagement with local members.”
