In celebration of International Women’s Day on 8 March 2020, CFA Society Singapore launched a social media initiative that advocated for gender diversity and involved its members, staff and board members.
Amidst the global coronavirus pandemic, CFA Society Singapore had to cancel a series of gender equality in-person events and nimbly moved its Diversity and Inclusion campaign online.
As part of this initiative, the local society invited Margaret Franklin, CFA, the first female CEO and President in the 73-year history of CFA Institute, to record a short video about gender diversity in the investment profession. Marg gamely accepted the request and this was arranged through the CFA Institute Asia Pacific office.
In the video, she spoke about a host of CFA Institute programmes that support and encourage women in financial services. The short clip was posted on the LinkedIn and Facebook pages of CFA Society Singapore. The posts garnered over 1,478 views and 2,938 impressions.
The local society also managed to get constituents to strike up the #EachforEqual pose. The International Women’s Day 2020 campaign theme, #EachforEqual, was drawn from a notion of “collective individualism”, expressing equality in pay and opportunities. The pose with parallel arms (the equal sign) was chosen to represent this notion.
Several society members, board members, and CFA Institute staff were supportive and posted images of themselves striking the pose. Each of these posts had an average of 1,800 impressions and 48 likes. The society also had its president, Ms. Tan Lay Hoon, CFA, and society members share their hopes and thoughts on gender diversity in the investment management world.
“At CFA Society Singapore, we are pleased to see the encouraging response from all Society members, CFA Institute staff, and Board members in support of International Women’s Day. We all have a shared responsibility in moving towards a more gender equal society,”
said Chan Choong Tho, CEO, CFA Society Singapore.
The local society will continue to advocate gender diversity in its activities and programmes and hopes to see a more equitable balance of male and female CFA Charterholders, candidates and volunteers as the local society and community progresses.
