On 16 October 2019, CFA Society Istanbul held a high-profile conference entitled “Sustainable Growth Through Capital Markets” to change the Turkish finance community’s perspective on the purpose of finance. CFA Society Istanbul President Albert Krespin made the opening speech and ex-President Ertunç Tümen, CFA, made the concluding remarks, summarising the conference.
CFA Society Istanbul brought together members, candidates, employers, university professors, regulators, and institutions from both the public and private sectors. Conference participants discussed issues around Turkish capital markets and heard from diverse, international speakers.
Chicago University Economics Professor Ufuk Akcigit discussed the architecture of finance, firm dynamics and systems that carry countries forward and James Robinson, author of “Why Nations Fail”, explored how to redefine the role of capital markets to ensure sustainable prosperity.
İlke Homriş, CFA, said:
“In line with the mission of CFA Society Istanbul, we used this conference to discuss how to create a financial industry that creates and shares prosperity and better serves the society. It was a great initiative by CFA Society İstanbul and relied on the hard work and support of society leaders, volunteers and CFA Institute executives.”
Paul Smith, CFA, former-CEO and President of CFA Institute and new CEO and President, Margaret Franklin, CFA, contributed to the conference with their opening remarks. CFA charterholders from other CFA Societies also participated by speaking at different panels at the conference. Due to the success of the event, the Society plans for this to be the first of many conferences to follow. For more details, visit www.financefortomorrow.ist.
