Objective 1: Review CPD Reading Materials
Prior to the meeting, Neil Govier sent out a reading packet with information on:
- What are other professional organization’s approach to CPD?
- Which regulators require mandatory CPD?
- The learning landscape – how adults learn
- Development and Implementation Issues
- How CFA Institute current approaches CPD
The council discussed the readings with varying insights.
The general themes that came out of the reading were:
- The name CPD can have a negative connotation – something needed to check the box.
- CPD should align with relationship to career, employer and public – ethics holds a key position
- There was thought that the focus would be on technical/regulatory issues, but it should also include leadership/soft skills.
- Beneficial to have CPD categorized with roles
- Improve CFA charterholder’s body of knowledge
- Content creation is important to supporting CPD
Objective 2: What is CPD and what do members want out of it?
After a good discussion on the readings, Josh Howard facilitated a more focused discussion around the expectations of CPD. The society representatives gave their views.
There was agreement that CPD can be viewed negatively if pushed upon members. That makes the need for CPD to be relevant, tailored and convenient, all the more important. All Council members see CPD as a key factor for the CFA Charter to maintain its brand and not be degraded.
The CFA Institute and Society members are generally passionate about learning and want content that is focused on a skill/sector and helps them plan towards their future goals.
As this was the second meeting, the conversations will continue to drive towards a definition of what CPD is for CFA Institute and Societies.
Objective 3: Review current status of CPD associated projects
Nick Bartlett discussed the objectives of the January Competency Framework sessions in London. He will be meeting with CPD Content Directors to pin down key issues, identify the level of granularity, and discuss job roles.
Emily Dunbar discussed the ongoing work for the CPD Tracker and CPD Member Research project. A technology consultant was appointed and began design of a more user-friendly CPD tracking tool. Preliminary design was delivered in December.
In November, Member Value engaged a design consultant to conduct research into member motivations to engage with CPD. The research project was launched at the XL ED meeting in NY and concepts will be delivered late March 2019.
Objective 4: Selection of Vice Chair
At this time, there were no nominations for Vice Chair. Emily Dunbar and Josh Howard agreed that CFA Institute staff could support Josh as needed. Future discussions will be had on identifying someone for the Vice Chair position.
