CFA Society The Bahamas hosts ethics training
On 24 January 2019, CFA Society The Bahamas hosted an Ethics Training under the theme: “How to Do The Right Thing Even When No One is Watching.” Guest speaker for the training was Michael McMillan, CFA, Director of Ethics Education, CFA Institute. The training was for financial services professionals and regulators and aimed to promote capital market integrity and help restore public trust in financial markets.
President of CFA Society The Bahamas, Aneka Rolle-Beneby said: “In our industry, ethical decision making is not often black or white. Our aim was to facilitate an affordable, practical and interactive workshop which would better equip industry professionals to navigate gray areas and make better decisions in the best interest of society and in turn for themselves and their companies.”
The ethics training consisted of two sessions: a breakfast session for financial services practitioners and a closed afternoon session for financial services regulators. The breakfast session was well attended by over 150 persons including bankers, pension trustees, lawyers, and compliance officers. Over 75 regulators attended the afternoon session including representatives from The Securities Commission of The Bahamas, The Central Bank of The Bahamas, The Compliance Commission of The Bahamas and The Insurance Commission of The Bahamas. Both workshops examined various real-life ethical dilemmas that financial services professionals may face. Participants were asked to select the best course of action via their smart device.
Speakers, Christina Rolle, Executive Director of The Securities Commission of The Bahamas, and Governor of The Central Bank of The Bahamas, John Rolle, CFA, both expressed that while regulators are in place to enforce the laws and encourage ethical behavior, it is up to individuals and their companies to be ethical.
The Society believes the support provided by local regulators, attendees and sponsors highlighted the need for this type of training in The Bahamas.
