Earlier this year, we conducted research amongst our global membership to inform the development of our future professional learning offering, including an evaluation of the need to add a mandatory learning requirement to maintain the CFA® charter. Based on that research and input from society representatives, we have developed the following plan to support the professional growth, development, and learning of our members and charterholders.

Ongoing professional learning is a critical component of maintaining the standards and relevance of the CFA charter and is vital to maintaining the trusted, rewarded, and relevant status of our members and charterholders. That is why we are building a transformative professional learning platform, which will deliver content within a competency framework, to meet their career development needs – from their first job through to retirement.
We will involve members and charterholders throughout the development process by collecting feedback on the user experience and making iterative improvements, with an aim to deliver a minimum viable product for use by autumn 2020. The platform will be free to members, and only once they believe in it will we assess sentiment about a mandatory professional learning requirement.
In alignment with our Principles of Partnership, we’ll also continue to seek your help, guidance, insight, and input on this important initiative. For more details on our vision and plan, check out the information below, including the video presentation by Keith Waitt, Senior Head of CPD Products at CFA Institute, and Nick Bartlett, CFA, Senior Director of CPD Competencies at CFA Institute from the 2019 CFA Society® Leadership Conference.
Our vision for a professional learning platform
- Users will have access to content from a diverse array of sources, in multiple formats, to suit all learning styles.
- Learning will be integrated into the flow of what our members and charterholders do every day, creating an experience that puts them in the very best position to take advantage of changes in their jobs, the workplace, and the investment management industry.
- Learning sources will include society-created content, member-recommended content, third-party content endorsed by CFA Institute, and content created by CFA Institute.
- Credits will be easy to track.
- The platform will use artificial intelligence for customization and will offer a personalized dashboard, ease of navigation, and content recommendations.
